I SO do this all the time - tell myself, "It's no big deal, I'm not going to win" but secretly start preparing my acceptance speech. Then, when I don't win, I'm crushed. I can't even count the number of times I've been in situations like that. (The Eddie's Attic open mic comes to mind; nope, I've never won or even placed in the top three.)
Just remember that it's totally subjective, that you never know what the judges are going to like, and that when you perform is almost more important than how well you perform - just like gymnastics at the Olympics! :)
