Dragon Con report-Part 1
Sep. 7th, 2004 04:53 pmWhat can I say? What a fabulous weekend! Missed out on Thursday and Friday, unfortunately. Tried to get in touch with
captnsparrow on Friday night, but cell reception in the hotels was crappy and I was tired after the show anyway.
Saturday morning, got there bright and early. Amanda was already there manning the TQA table. She’d done a great job making the banner, photo collage, and some schedules. I also got to see my Ariana faerie, made by QuietMoon from the Lost Boys forum. She’s the one who made the adorable Lost Boys dragons for the North GA Celtic Festival. Ariana Faerie is just adorable, and I have her sitting on my entertainment center at home.
Played the Art Show gig at 11:30 on Saturday morning. Had lots of old friends there and some new faces too (that was the standard for the weekend, I think). It’s great to have all Three Quarters back together again. Overall, I think we played really well and I know we sold a bunch of CD’s, so…success! As much as I love playing the concourse (which we did at 4 PM on Saturday), because of the visibility factor and the larger stage and the room for the fans and not having to contend with all the “rules”, I so think we do better acoustic/”unplugged”, simply because of the nature of our act. Having to remember to “sing into the microphone” can be difficult when we’re so not used to that.
In between shows on Saturday,
captnsparrow and I wandered around the Dealers’ room and the Exhibition Hall. He bought a Utilikilt! Woo Hoo! Boy o boy do I love men in kilts. Got to see it yesterday too, and I definitely approve. :) I also enjoyed getting to be Jack’s Lady. :) So many people wanted to take photos of him, and unless they wanted a photo of themselves WITH him, he just held on to me so I was in the photo too. Can’t wait to see the pics that I know will be popping up on the internet soon! Got to meet some of the Capt.’s LEXX friends, as well, and see Michele in the Xev costume that he made (she looked great!) and
sarahtree in her Sam shirt and cute little leafy crown. (Sorry I missed the “I Ate’nt Dead” sign!)
Grabbed a quick lunch, as I was getting light-headed and blood sugar was dropping, and headed back to the Concourse for the TQA set. We drew a good crowd, and it’s always good to work when Casey (hope I spelled her name right) is running sound for us. If we HAVE to be miked, at least we get to have a good sound lady!
Had to bolt after the 4 PM TQA show to get back to the Tavern for opening night of Much Ado! The show was a huge success, and we had the Club Season Opening champagne reception afterwards. I hung out for a little while, but was pretty eager to get back down to Con.
Headed back down, met up with the Captain and Barbossa. Headed up to the Klingon party. It was really crowded, so we just kind of sat around outside watching all the people come and go. We were all pretty beat, though, so shortly we called it a night.
Back again, early on Sunday morning! Mom and I beat Amanda there this time, and snagged the table so no one else could set up there. Manda did a great job with the table; the only suggestion that someone made to me was to find a way to put the banner up above the table so it’s a bit more visible. Once the captain showed up, he and I wandered off again to see what was going on. Went down to the dealer’s room to wander around. I almost got run over by June Lockhart, the mom from “Lassie.” She was in a big hurry! Wade bought a Captain Jack poster and a Labyrinth poster, and I got some LOTR magnets (all the hobbits and Eowyn). Saw a really cute Supergirl tee, but decided against it.
Got some lunch and headed back to the Concourse.
singedcat was playing, so we had a little picnic on the floor and watched her show.
speruoc was there as well, so the two of them did a couple songs together, including “Bedlam Boys.” :) Plus she played my favorite, “Bessie Quinn.” Yay!
Gathered up our stuff and headed back over to the Art Show for TQA’s final performance of the Con. Apparently, one of the bands that had played the day before (not us) had been too loud, had too many fans crowding the aisles, and people complained, so they had taped a box on the floor to mark off where we and our fans could be. Ugh. We were a little frustrated, but managed to make it all work. We shmoozed a bit, and a couple of folks wanted to take our photo after the show (no cameras allowed in the Art Show), so we packed up and went out into the lobby area and posed for photo ops. All in all I think it was a very successful Con for TQA, in terms of performances, CD sales, and connecting with some old friends and new fans. One of my favorite moments was later in the day Sunday when a nice gentleman came up behind me and said “Wassail!” Hee!
Went back over to the Concourse, and I think we were all pretty tired! Sacked out on the floor, cuddling with the Captain for a while, pretty much until it was time for me to head back to the Tavern for Much Ado. I was pretty dang tired the first half of the show, and having much trouble concentrating…thank goodness for Debbie who got me some caffeine during intermission. Second half I was much more awake and focused. And of course, headed back down to Con after the show.
Sunday night at Con is always much fun, because it’s the Masquerade. I got there seemingly just as folks were starting to get back from the Civic Center, where the Masquerade is held now. The Marriott was dead, because everyone was people watching at the Hyatt. Captnsparrow told me to meet him downstairs near the band table in the Hyatt, but it was so crowded, and we’re both so short, that we had a difficult time finding each other. Hung out with Molly, Amanda, and a couple of Molly’s friends until I got a phone call from the Captn:
“Where are you?”
“Right near the doors, where are you?”
“Right near the information desk.”
I turn around, and he’s right behind me. HEE! So we wander off to see all the spiffy costumes. Meet up with a whole troup of pirates, including Hook (Dustin Hoffman style), Captain Morgan, and several others. We line up, and suddenly people are running up to take pictures. I saw spots in front of my eyes for about the next hour.
Headed upstairs to the lobby, where there were even more great costumes. Saw some fabulous Elven archers, including Haldir (capt’s friend Julia). Her husband was dressed as Boromir, complete with arrows sticking out of him. There were some gorgeous elf-maidens, too, and many hobbits. Saw Wayne and Garth from “Wayne’s World.” Saw the costume contest winners: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem from the Muppets. Wandered around a bit more, saw
dlrium and
miatuc, who Wade is trying to talk into dressing as Sam Gamgee for next year’s con. Hee! Took lots of photos of all the pretty costumes, but it was getting late, so we decided to head out.
As we were leaving, ran into
akanepanda and her man Jack. Hung on the steps of the Hyatt for a little while talking to them. Someone had pranked a pizza guy, who was then selling the pizzas for $5…so we bought one. Alas, it was late, and we were all exhausted, so we called it a night.
More to come….
